Like most people, we spent some time trying out various names for our 12-week-old puppy. He ended up with Toby because it was the only name he responded to. In hindsight, I think we should have used my brother's suggestion, “Sue” from the Johnny Cash song, because we like to say that Toby is a "Sazerac". His Australian Shepherd mother was rescued in New Orleans after the Hurricane Katrina and a Sazerac is an old Bourbon Cocktail (note Toby’s color) originating in New Orleans. The cocktail consists mostly of Bourbon with a dash of several other ingredients tossed in for good measure with only a hint of sugar served shaken not stirred. Toby's strong personality (with more than a hint of sugar) makes him dear to my heart.
